One of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Pithas. Ambubachi fair is celebrated during the monsoon season that happens to fall during the Assamese month Ahaar (middle of June). It is the celebration of the yearly menstruation course of the goddess Kamakhya. During this fair daily worship and other religious performances are also stopped for three days. The doors of the Temple are reopened after the bath rituals after three days. It is one of the major festivals of this region.
